Top Ten Books I HAD To Buy...But Are Still Sitting On My Shelf Unread

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme where book bloggers come up with their Top Ten list for a particular book topic. Here at Looking at the Panacea, Chantelle and Nara each pick their top five to give a combined list of ten. This week's topic is:

Top Ten Books I HAD To Buy...But Are Still Sitting On My Shelf Unread

NARA

1. Paper Towns by John Green
Two words. John. Green. Need I say more?

2. Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan
So many people have recommended this book to me that I don't know why I haven't read it yet. I initially had an ebook copy of it lying around, but then I saw it up on NetGalley and thought, what the hey, I may as well request it so that I can properly provide a review for the publisher. Yet I still haven't gotten around to reading it. It'll probably happen soon.

3. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
This one was recently named a Printz Honour Book (for 2013) so it must be good. I first saw this about July of last year and got myself a copy, but it seems I got distracted by all these other books, so I still haven't read it.

4. The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
This book was #79 on the 2012 Dymocks 101 Club (top 101 books as voted by Dymocks customers). So clearly, quite a few people must have enjoyed it. The premise is certainly interesting enough.

5. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
I've had a copy of this one for aaaaages so I guess it's a bit weird that I haven't started it yet. The premise is quite similar to Speechless, and I loved that one, so I should definitely read this one soon.

CHANTELLE

1. Paper Towns by John Green
I bought the John Green box set, the beauty of which you can see here, and Paper Towns is the only one left that I haven't read. I think subconsciously I just want to savour his brilliance by not reading them all at once, but nevertheless, I really need to get around to it! DFTBA

2. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Unarguably THE thriller of 2012, there is so much hype about this novel it's crazy! However, I read Stieg Larsson's Millenium trilogy last year, and with that weird phobia I have of running out of amazing books, Gone Girl is still sitting on my shelf untouched.

3. Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles #1) by Melina Marchetta
I am a huuuuuge Melina Marchetta fan, she is possibly my favourite Australian YA author. Even my sister who does not read, read her books and loved them. The only works of hers left for me to read, are the Lumatere chronicles, so naturally I've been putting it off. Oh gosh, I really have author separation anxiety issues...

4. The Iron King (The Iron Fey #2) by Julie Kagawa
After reading Kagawa's Blood Eden series, I know she writes amazing fantasies, so why I haven't read this novel that basically everyone has told me to read? No idea... or maybe an idea.

5. Partials (Partials #1) by Dan Wells
Fragments (Partials #2) is one of Nara's Panacea Candidates for 2013, so being a good friend, I'm going to have to read it! There are just so many books TBR...

  1. Gone Girl! Eeeks - go read that one right away. I totally understand your reluctance to finish reading a really good author. Great list.

  2. Honestly, this Top Ten is making me ask an important question: How many books go unread?

Are there used books in used bookstores that have actually never been opened? Lots of them?

I'm beginning to wonder if there might be many, many such books.

    1. I agree. There will definitely be a lot of books that go unread, particularly if they're just not that well known. I guess it's a bit sad that we won't be able to read every book out there...

  3. I'm guilty of devouring all of John Green's books as soon as he releases them. And whenever I'm in need of a fix, I just reread. Speak is one that made it to my list this week-- I keep hearing so many good things about it. Great list! DFTBA

  7. Code Name Verity is on my list, too! I've heard so much awesomeness about it, I think I'm a little wary of starting it and being disappointed.

    1. So true. And seeing as though it's a Printz Honour Book, I don't know if my expectations of the book are too high!
