Reading Update (19/1/14)

Okay, so here in Adelaide where I live, we had this massive heatwave which meant that the entire week it was over 40 degrees Celsius (converts to 104 degrees Fahrenheit), and the hottest day it was 46 Celsius (115 Fahrenheit) so yeah. I really didn't go out much this week. Which meant I got a lot of reading done. Seriously, it was a lot. Not even sure myself how I read that much haha. Reminder, this is for the books I've read for the past 2 weeks :)

First Read
Horde by Ann Aguirre- 4 Stars

The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater- 5 Stars + Incredible.
Woaaah man, this book definitely lived up to the hype. So much better than The Raven Boys!

The Warded Man by Peter V Brett- 5 Stars

Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher- 3 Stars
While the premise of this book was pretty good, the execution was a bit lacking. The pace was so damn slow- the constant POV changes weren't helpful either.

Rebel by Amy Tintera- 5 Stars + Incredible. To be reviewed
I saw this title on EW and almost had a heart attack haha. Downloaded it and read it pretty much straight away, and dayum it was a nice ending to the duology. Btw, anyone wanting to read this DO NOT READ THE BLURB. It's super spoilery.

Phoenix Island by John Dixon- 3 Stars. Reviewed.

The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch- 5 Stars + Incredible + Favourite + Panacea Candidate
The third book in the Gentleman Bastards sequence, and maaaaan I love these books. They're so incredibly written. And just really, really clever.

All the Truth That's in Me by Julie Berry- 5 Stars

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn- 5 Stars + Incredible
This book was SO effed up. In a good way though lol. But still, omg things certainly didn't go the way I wanted...

Her Dark Curiosity by Megan Shepherd- 4 Stars. Reviewed
Tape by Steven Camden- 3 Stars (but 4/10). To be reviewed.
The Maze Runner by James Dashner- 4 Stars
Side Effects May Vary by Julie Murphy- 4 Stars. To be reviewed.
Sweet Damage by Rebecca James- 5 Stars
Secret by Brigid Kemmerer- 5 Stars + Incredible. To be reviewed.

Battle Royale by Koushun Takami- 5 Stars + Incredible
The Hunger Games parallels cannot be denied- I can't believe Suzanne Collins hadn't read this before writing THG, because they're really similar. I'd definitely recommend giving this book a read, because it's quite incredible. And more realistic, in a way, than The Hunger Games.

On the Fence by Kasie West- 5 Stars + Incredible.
All I can say about this book is PREORDER IT. PREORDER IT NOWWW.

The Desert Spear by Peter V Brett- 5 Stars.

Reread
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Reread this because I went to watch the movie and go to an author signing. Might do a post about it. We'll see.
The Distance Between Us by Kasie West
After reading On the Fence, I couldn't resist giving this another read hehe.

Currently Reading
Find Me by Romily Bernard
The Daylight War by Peter V Brett

Love is an Open Door
I went to see Frozen on Tuesday, and omg it's such an amazing movie. And out of the songs, I think this is my favourite. Such a catchy rhythm and tune :D

For the First Time in Forever (Reprise)
aaaand yeah. Another Frozen song. THIS ENTIRE SOUNDTRACK IS EPICALLY AWESOME. I like the Reprise better than the original- I love the bit where Idina/Elsa dominates over Kristen/Anna.

  1. OMG 46?! THAT'S CRAZY!! The hottest it's been around Western Sydney was like 42 or so and I thought I was dying haha. I'm seriously contemplating going to pre-order On The Fence! I loved Pivot Point and I still have yet to read Distance Between Us so I really want to experience one of her Contemporaries!

    1. Yeah it was pretty bad. Good thing Adelaide is fairly dry, because if it was humid I probably would have died haha. DO ITTT! Also, buy Distance Between Us. It's really really good :D

  2. Holy crap, where you live is pretty equivalent to here in Vegas! I hate the hot weather so much. I want to live somewhere where the summers are warm, but not too hot (just enough for the beach), and the winters are chilly and require blankets and hot chocolate and fire-building.

I still haven't read The Distance Between Us! I think I'll enjoy it more than Pivot Point, which I didn't finish but plan on returning to, because it's contemporary and I'm such a sucker for contemporary romances. I'll have to check out On The Fence, too. :P

I can't wait to read Gone Girl, I think I will love it. Glad to hear you love Frozen, I've heard so many great things about it.

It's actually been okay inside. Take one step outside and you get burnt to a crisp though haha

  4. Oh gosh, you read a LOT of books!!! I've seen all the updates on the heatwave on the news, gee, I'm glad I don't live down there. Unbelievable. I hope you're managing to stay (a bit) cool! Are you reviewing Rebel?! I'm a huge Reboot fan and I can't WAIT until I can get my hands on Rebel!!

You definitely won't be disappointed by it if you liked Reboot :D
But seriously, DO NOT READ THE BLURB OF REBEL. haha

    1. The Razorland trilogy (I think that's what it's called...) is really quite good! I think the 3rd book was a bit less enjoyable than the other two, but it was a pretty solid series overall.

  6. YAY, you loved Battle Royale!! Just yay :) And 46 °C is HOT. In summer, the temperature sometimes touches the 40 °C mark here too, but normally it ranges between 30-38. But at least you got a lot of reading done :)

    1. Battle Royale was epic! I'd watched the movie recently and so was like, yeah let's go read the book. Man, the book is HUGE. Didn't realise it'd be so long. It's so much better than the movie :D
We get over 40 pretty much every summer. sigh.

  8. I have to see Frozen! It is playing at a little theater near me and I hope to make it there this week. It is freezing here, but since it is hot where you are- I hope it cooled you off a bit.

Look at all that reading! WOW! I loved Gone Girl- it kept me turning the pages like mad! I haven't read anything else by the author, yet- but plan to check out more of her work!

Hope you can cool off soon!

    1. Frozen is so good! The animation and the songs and ahhh! It was beautiful :')

Me too! I'd definitely like to read some of Gillian Flynn's other works- Gone Girl was amazing, so I feel like her others would at the very least be well written haha

  9. Holy crap Batman! That's beyond impressive!

So many books on this list that I'd love to read. I have a few Stiefvater books to get through - not that one, though, I need to read her previous titles first (so far I've only read Shiver, have the rest of that trilogy and then The Scorpio Races and The Raven Boys to get through!).

I've read The Lies of Locke Lamora and loved it, even though I found it slow reading. Have had Gone Girl sitting around since it came out! I absolutely loved Battle Royale too - I read it after watching the movie and the two are very similar.

I'm going to have to bookmark this list so I can remember these recommendations. It's absolutely lovely down here in Tassie - took a while to warm up and while they've said we've had temperatures in the 30s, you can't really feel it. No humidity!! Ah bliss! It's just sunny and hot without being painful, with nice breezes. I've never been to Adelaide but I I spent a month in Shepparton, it was January and the entire month it was excruciatingly humid and 38-40 degrees (when I lived in Toronto, which also gets humid, they also give the "humidex" which tells you what it feels like, which I liked - wish they'd do that here so everyone felt more justified complaining about the heat! ha ha)

    1. The Scorpio Races is really good! And while I though The Raven Boys was just okay, The Dream Thieves is definitely a lot better. I tried reading Shiver but thought it was a terrible book haha.

I love Lies :D It is a bit slow to start off with, but then I felt like there was this point I reached where suddenly everything took off and I was hooked. Same with Gone Girl- it's fairly slow to start, but then BAM.

Ugh humid and hot is not a good combination...Adelaide is really dry as well, thankfully! So while it's over 40 degrees, it's probably not as horrible as it could be haha

  10. SO MANY GOOD BOOKS!
I'm trying not to leave a fangirly comment but it will be that way ok.

Yes to the Dream Thieves, I told you it was good! Also, AHHH REBEL! AND SIDE EFFECTS MAY VARY! Seriously, that is one of my most anticipated reads this year!I need to read Gone Girl soon as well especially because of the upcoming movie. Also, I have All the Truth That's in Me and I need to read that soon as well (for my upcoming book club meeting).

I'm glad to see that the weather isn't keeping you down & thanks for sharing!

    1. Fangirly comments are completely acceptable here at Looking for the Panacea haha

Yep, definitely TDT was one good book :D A lot better than TRB!
Side Effects May Vary actually didn't quite live up to my expectations, but it was still definitely a good book. The MC was kind of unlikeable lol.
Gone Girl is going to be a really good movie if they can pull it off well...the book was seriously effed up haha

Ahhhh! I love Frozen. Such a great movie :D

  11. Gosh, you read a lot of books. Melbourne was pretty bad too - I read a lot but actually spent much of my commute on the bus - because of course in the heat the trains were down - sleeping, as there wasn't much sleeping happening in 30 degrees overnight!
I loved Gone Girl - how crazy is that book! Totally looking forward to the movie. Oh, and The Book Thief, and am keen to read The Distance Between Us and Side Effects May Vary.

    1. It was pretty bad when we went outside, but inside wasn't too hot because the air con was on 24/7 haha. So thankfully the sleep was not disturbed :P

Gone Girl is INSANE. I don't think I've read any other book quite like it. Hopefully they can pull off the movie!
The Distance Between Us is amazing- perfect for when you need a fluffy contemp romance :)
